Rail Travel

Italy has an extensive rail network which is run, for the most part, by the Ferrovie dello Stato(FS) and links major cities such as Turin, Milan, Verona, Venice, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, Rome, Naples, Brindisi and Palermo. Train tickets in Italy are generally inexpensive, services are frequent and the train stock ismodern. Trains are classified as follows:

  • ES Eurostar-high speed, internal and intra-European routes
  • IC Intercity-express trains, domestic service
  • EC Eurocity-express trains, international service
  • CIS Asalpino-Italian-Swiss rail routes
  • EXPR Espresso-express trains
  • DIR Diretto-semi-express trains making many stops
  • IR Interregionale + REG Regionale-local trains

Bus Travel

In Italy, good coach services run between cities and towns and there are also good local bus services. Virtually every Italian city has a bus system, most of which are cheap, comprehensive and efficient. There are usually bus links from train stations to town centres.

A major Italian company that operates throughout the country is SITA s.p.a, Viale dei Cadorna, 105-50129 Firenze.

Road System

Driving in Italy is a good way of exploring the countryside and less accessible towns and villages. Petrol is expensive in Italy and it can be difficult to park in medieval villages. However, Italy does have a good network of motorways. Major routes include the A1 Bologna to Florence and between Bolona, Parma and Milan; A11 Florence-Pisa; A12 Genoa-Rosignano; Firenze-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway. Secondary roads are known as Nazionali (N) or as Strade Statali(SS), are numerous but vary in quality. The official website with highway maps, routes and tolls is www.autostrade.it.

Ferry Services

There are many services linking the islands by sea to the mainland. The main links are by car ferries and hydro-foils. The main embarkation ports for the large island of Sicily and Sardinia are Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Fiumicino, Naples and Villa San Giovanni.

The primary companies are:

  • Tirrenia Navigazioni
  • Grandi Traghetti
  • Trans Tirreno Express
  • Moby Lines
  • Sardinia Ferries
